Green Army

On this page:

Queensland's Green Army aims to create new jobs to enhance our natural assets, strengthen our tourism industry and promote increased environmental awareness.

The Queensland Government is investing $57m over three years from 1 July 2009 to create 3000 jobs in Queensland's Green Army.  There will be 2300 green work placements and 700 green traineeships available throughout the State.

Queensland's Green Army is working on projects of strategic importance to enhance our natural assets, strengthen our tourism industry and promote increased environmental awareness for all Queenslanders. Details of approved projects are posted on this site as they are approved.

Following Tropical Cyclone Yasi and the devastating flooding across Queensland in 2010/11, 2000 Community Work Placement jobs are being directed towards natural disaster recovery projects. These jobs are being delivered through Queensland’s Green Army.

Community Work Placements are part of the 2011 Queensland Natural Disasters Jobs and Skills Package (JSP), an $83m investment by the Queensland and Australian Governments. The JSP is helping affected communities implement job and skills preservation strategies to help industry and businesses maintain their workforce.

For more information on the JSP, visit disaster package information on the Skills Queensland website.

Green work placements

Community organisations, local governments and state government departments can apply for funding to run Queensland Green Army projects.

Priority will be given to projects that target essential public infrastructure, education and training infrastructure, and community spaces. All Work Placements projects being delivered under Queensland’s Green Army will focus on rebuilding the community and provide lasting community benefit.

Types of activities may include:

Workers wages will depend on their age, and skill levels. These jobs are generally full-time with workers doing a mix of supervised work and training for up to six months. Workers are employed under the Community Jobs Plan Employee Conditions Order.

Green Traineeships

An additional 700 Green Traineeship positions are also being offered.

Green Trainees have 12 months paid work and training with organisations.

Eligible Green Traineeships are generally targeted at Certificate II and III levels in a range of occupations including but not limited to:

Green Traineeships are primarily for young persons aged 15-24 years without post-school qualifications who need a nationally accredited qualification to get their 'first start' in the workforce. Green Traineeships will provide regional coverage and target locations of high unemployment, including urban fringe communities, and ensure all equity groups have the opportunity to participate.
